Yesterday I was in the heart of the Corbières (South of France) to help Manu gather the lavender flowers. She and Christophe live in Paradise - that's really the name of the place and it's so appropriate! It's really quiet up there, far away from everything and I spent a day there with the happy crew of the lavender gatherers. :)

The first tarp, before we began working (five of them will be full by evening)

With a bed sheet wrapped and tied around our chest, we gather the flowers and bring them to the tarp, where they'll dry in the open air for a couple of days.

"Lavandin" is a hybrid made from two lavendel varieties;
it produces more (and is cheaper) and contains camphor.

The flowers are cut with a sickle.
Using a machine would actually be more complicated... and far less fun!

To thank me for my help, I've received a small bottle of "lavandin" essential oil, I'll use it for my soap. Manu also makes jelly and syrop (with lavender, thyme and rosemary) as well as wool products from her herd.
Speaking of which... She and Christophe present their project on kisskissbankbank: they would like to have a bigger herd in order to develop their activity in their environment, the "garrigue", which is nowadays neglected because all economic ressources goes into the wine. If their project appeals to you, feel free to support them :)
